SELF-HELP GROUP OF WOMEN

Self-help groups are started by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that generally have broad anti-poverty agendas. Self-help groups are seen as instruments for goals including empowering women, developing leadership abilities among poor people, increasing school enrollments, and improving nutrition and the use of birth control. Financial intermediation is generally seen more as an entry point to these other goals, rather than as a primary objective. Through these groups women will be empowered in educational, economical, political and spiritual fields. These are the groups having 10-12 women members who assemble monthly once and save some amount of money. This amount is kept in a nationalized bank with a savings bank account in the name of Self Help Group. After a fine amount is collected internal loan lending will be started. For the accountability of all the transactions, each group should maintain some books of accounts viz., minutes book, cash book, individual pass books, ledger book, savings and credit book. For the economic up-liftment of their family they start or upgrade some income generation activities. For that purpose they require loan. MANUVIKASA has collaborated with ICICI bank, NABARD (NABFINS), Micrograam and other banks for the loan purpose. But in the beginning for the formation of the Self Help Groups approximately Rs. 2000/- is required per SHG. This includes staff wages, travel, imparting training and purchase of books.
